Lappeenranta Bio-refinery – Hydrogen unit, UPM

UPM’s Lappeenranta Biorefinery is the first commercial-scale biorefinery to produce renewable wood-based diesel and naphtha. Production capacity is 130.000 ton/a. Operation started in 2015.

Challenges

° Procurement, prefabrication and installation of new hydrogen piping

° Limited amount of space as the new piping replaced the old one

° Installation to be done in short outage

° Extremely demanding welding (Inconel Alloy 625)

° High quality standard and strict requirements

Solutions

° High prefabrication rate (almost 90%) was used for shortening lead time and reducing needed manpower at site

° Zero weld defects at installation site

° Disciplines: process piping

° Lifespan: execution period Q1/2022 – Q2/2023 (Installation outage in April 2023)
